Gold Getter Detailed Instructions:
- Like any piece of mining equipment, the unit should be washed with soap and water to remove any traces of oil left from the manufacturing process. Caution, classifier screen is spring-loaded and will snap up when the first clip is removed. Classifier screen may have sharp edges. Handle with caution! Remove clips and attach to handles. Remove classifier screen from tray. Wash screen and tray.
- Reassemble tray with convex side of screen toward the bottom of the tray. (The classifier screen is purposely arched. It keeps the screen tensioned on the top of the riffles). Now you’re ready to git some gold!
- Place gold getter in water and fill with one scoop of unclassified pay dirt.
- Hold the tray by the handles. While the pan is in the water, agitate the tray with a rapid front and back motion by flexing the wrists up and down, not side to side. Do this for about 10 seconds before lifting the tray out of the water. Rapid agitation of the tray keeps the concentrates in the riffles fluid, allowing gold to concentrate in the bottom, and lighter materials to float off.
- Lift one end of the tray out of the water faster than the other creating an angle. Water leaving the tray will remove the waste material. Lower the unit back into the water and repeat in the opposite direction. When you are able to see the green of the riffles through the top of the screen, it’s time to add another scoop. “See the green and go.”
- To do a quick clean-up in the field, inver the tray in a five gallon bucket and plunge up and down a couple of times. Concentrates will fall into the bucket to process later. How often you plunge depends on your soil type. In rivers or streams with sandy gravel, clean the unit after processing approximately five gallons of unclassified material. On rivers and streams that have more clay, the unit may need to be cleaned every six scoops. Experiment to see what cleaning frequency works best for your conditions. When you are done for the day, disassemble the tray and rinse clean, adding to your other concentrates.
- Finally, in order to keep the Gold Getter cost as low as possible, common binder clips are used to secure the classifier screen to the tray. They are available anywhere supplies are sold. They do the job, and allow you to inexpensively replace lost or damaged clips. They also allow you to try different types of screens. We highly recommend you bring extra clips along in case you lose one or your kid borrows them for a science project and doesn’t bring them back. THe clips can be tethered to the handles to prevent loss. THe handle tension can be adjusted to your liking by loosening the handle screws. Loosen for cleaning if the handles become stiff with silt buildup. THe Gold Getter is designed to be used with the classifier screen in place as waste material flows out easier. Without it, stones slightly larger than the riffle width can jam in the riffle and you’ll have to stop and clean them.
